China's emergence as a single centralized state dates back to 221 BC. Qin Shi Huang united the seven great kingdoms under one banner and gave himself the title "Divine First Emperor".

The official founding date of the modern Chinese state is October 1, 1949. Mao Zedong, the leader of the Communist Party who won the civil war, declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
